Black Dog Pizza

Neo-Neapolitan brick-oven pizza on Main Street
Black Dog Pizza came from a Thursday night habit that got out of hand, in the best way. Hendrix, the restaurant on Main Street in downtown Columbia, had been running pizza nights on Thursdays, and people kept showing up for them. Enough people, for long enough, that the obvious next step was a room of their own. So in early 2026, Black Dog Pizza opened right beneath Hendrix, in the former Woody spot at 1649 Main St. The name comes from a co-owner's black lab, which tells you the kind of place this is before you ever walk in.
The pizza is neo-Neapolitan, which is a way of saying Old World technique with modern Columbia energy. The crust comes out of a brick oven crisp-edged and light, the toppings are honest, and the whole thing sits in that sweet spot between a purist's pie and the kind of pizza a Friday night crowd actually orders. The menu keeps good company around it: focaccia sandwiches for lunch, salads for whoever wants one, and specialty pies like the fried pickle pizza. I have tried it, and I will not stop mentioning it, because it is exactly the sort of thing a place like this should be known for.
For drinks, the spritzes are the easygoing move, and the negronis are for when you feel like being a little more serious about it. The room itself is easygoing, the way a good neighborhood spot should be. You can duck in for a quick lunch, split pies with friends, or stay a while and let Main Street do the entertaining. It is open Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday, which makes the Tuesday through Saturday stretch feel like a small event every week.
When someone is relocating to the Midlands and asking what downtown Columbia actually feels like, this is the sort of thing I mean. A brand new room on Main Street, opened by people who already had a following here, serving food people will drive across town for. That is not something you will find on any listing, but it is exactly the thing that makes a place feel like home.
What to Order
Start with a pie, because the pie is the whole point. The neo-Neapolitan crust comes out of the brick oven crisp and light, Old World underneath with enough modern Columbia energy on top. If you are there for lunch, the focaccia sandwiches hold their own, and the salads keep things light, whatever that looks like for you.
Then order the fried pickle pizza. I know how it sounds. Order it anyway. It is the specialty pie people tell their friends about, and it is exactly as good as it should be. For the table, a spritz if you are staying casual, a negroni if you are not.
And if you are new to Columbia and wondering whether downtown is really your kind of place, go on a Tuesday. The room is a little quieter, the oven is just warming up, and you can take your time. In by six, out by eight, and already planning which pie you are bringing people back for.

Own a local business in the Midlands?
I am always looking for good local businesses to spotlight in Irmo, Chapin, Lexington, and around Columbia. The kind of places I actually go to and genuinely tell people about. If you run a shop, a restaurant, or a service that makes this area feel like home, I would like to hear from you.
