Local Business Spotlight

One business, every week. The places I tell my clients about when they ask what the neighborhoods around here actually feel like — not the tourist version, but the real one.

A cozy local bakery storefront in the South Carolina Midlands, warm and inviting

ButterKreme Queen Bakery

Irmo, SC

I will be honest with you — I have a soft spot for a good local bakery. There is something about a place that takes the time to do things from scratch, using real butter and real sugar, that just hits different. ButterKreme Queen Bakery on St Andrews Road in Irmo is that kind of place.

They call themselves a modern bakery rooted in tradition, and I think that sums it up pretty well. You will find celebration cakes with Swiss meringue buttercream that is worth the trip on its own, oversized cinnamon rolls that are somehow both indulgent and not too sweet, lemon pound cake, cookies, pies, and these things called Chewies made with pecans that I honestly cannot stop thinking about. They also do savory items like biscuits and sausage gravy, tomato pie, and chicken salad if you want something on the less sweet side.

What I like about ButterKreme Queen is that it is clearly a family-run operation with a strong sense of what they are about. The reviews are outstanding — 4.8 stars on Yelp and 100% recommended on Facebook, which is the kind of thing you only get when people genuinely love what you are doing. The space is small and unpretentious, the kind of bakery where you walk in, smell the butter and sugar, and know you are in the right place.

If you are new to the Irmo area and looking for a place to grab a treat that actually tastes like somebody made it with care, ButterKreme Queen is worth a stop. They are closed Monday and Tuesday, open Wednesday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is one of those places I am glad to know about, and I think you will be too.

Own a local business in the Midlands?

I am always looking for good local businesses to spotlight — the kind of places I actually go to and genuinely tell people about. If you run a shop, a restaurant, a service, or anything else that makes Irmo, Chapin, or Lexington feel like home, I would like to hear from you.
